Aphid control in fruit trees: prevention and treatment
You do not beat aphids with a spray, you beat them with a calendar. One female makes twenty generations in a season and gives birth to live young without ever meeting a male — and the spray that kills the colony also kills the ladybird that was doing the job for free.

Chapter one
Why an aphid population explodes overnight
If you read only one part of this page, read this one. Any aphid advice built without this cycle in view arrives late.

Glossy black eggs in bark cracks and around bud bases. The only stage where the whole of next year’s population is in one place — and the most reachable target in the entire cycle.

Chapter two
Is it actually an aphid? Six insects that get confused
Three of these six are barely touched by anything sold for aphids, and one of them — the mite — gets worse after a broad-spectrum spray. So identification is the first economic decision on this page.

Aphid
The difference: A soft pear-shaped body and two short tubes — cornicles — at the rear. Slow, and it rarely bothers to run.

Psyllid
The difference: Wings held roof-like over the back, and it jumps at the slightest touch. No tubes at the rear.
If you get it wrong: Different timing and different rates; an aphid programme usually misses it entirely.
Whitefly
The difference: Small, powdery white wings. Shake the branch and a white cloud rises — something an aphid never does.
If you get it wrong: A different cycle under glass, and an aphid spray will not reach the scales under the leaf.
Thrips
The difference: Very narrow and elongated, like a line. The real field sign is silvering on the leaf surface, not the insect.
If you get it wrong: The damage is on flowers and young fruit, and both the threshold and the timing are separate.
Mealybug
The difference: A white waxy coat with short filaments all around the margin. Almost motionless, and it hides in crevices.
If you get it wrong: The wax repels a contact spray; without an oil or a wetter, nothing happens.
Mite
The difference: Eight legs instead of six, a round body, and fine webbing between leaves. The webbing usually shows before the mite does.
If you get it wrong: The worst mistake available: a broad-spectrum spray kills mite predators and the mite population multiplies afterwards.
Which aphid on which tree?
This is not a quarantine list, it is a "where to look" list. Several of these species will take other hosts under pressure.

Chapter three
Three routes of damage, and only two answer to counting
The first two rise and fall with how many aphids there are, so a threshold and a count govern them. The third has nothing to do with numbers — and that is what pushes this page towards prevention rather than a better spray.
Direct feeding on sap
The colony settles on a growing shoot and draws phloem sap. Extension stops, leaves curl, and in a tree’s establishment year that alone is a season lost.
What you see: Curled and clustered terminal leaves, a shoot that stopped short, and a dense colony under the leaf.
Honeydew and sooty mould
Aphids excrete the surplus sugar as honeydew. It falls onto the leaf below and sooty mould grows on it — a black film that takes the light and cuts photosynthesis. On fruit it costs a grade.
What you see: A sticky shine on leaves and fruit, then black velvety patches, and ants running up and down the trunk.
Virus transmission
Some viruses move in a single probe, before the aphid has even decided whether to stay on this tree. No spray is fast enough to get inside that second.
What you see: Mosaic and distortion on a tree that was clean in previous years — and the sign stays after the aphids have gone.
Scouting and the action threshold
What separates a professional grower from an amateur is not the product they buy; it is that they counted before buying it. The three figures below are a working frame, and if your local extension service has given you a number of its own, that number wins.

Where: the growing shoots
Aphids sit on soft tissue, not old leaves. Check terminal shoots and water sprouts, from several scattered points in the block rather than one row.
What: the underside
The colony is under the leaf, not on top of it. Turn it over. While you are there, look for ladybird larvae and bronze mummies too — their presence changes the decision.
When: mornings, weekly
Once a week through the peak, in the cool of the morning when the insects are slow. A monthly walk means three generations went unseen.
Record: write the number down
Log the share of infested shoots with the date. The right decision comes from the trend across two rounds, not from how bad today looked.
A threshold is not a universal constant: it is lower in a bearing orchard with fruit close to harvest, lower again in a nursery or an establishment year, and higher in a block where ladybird larvae are already at work. The figure on this page is a starting point, not a verdict.
Chapter four
What the orchard is already doing for free
Most aphid colonies collapse in June with nobody doing anything. These five are the reason — and a broad-spectrum spray removes all five in an afternoon.

Ants: they cancel every figure above
Ants eat the honeydew and defend the colony in return. A colony under ant protection is one none of these five predators reaches — and a grower who has not banded the trunk has effectively hired security for the aphids.

Chapter five
The treatment ladder: cheapest first, most destructive last
Listed, these eight options let a grower read down to the strongest thing available. Plotted on two axes, it becomes clear which corner the strongest thing sits in — and why that corner is a trap.

Breaks down the waxy layer on the aphid’s body. It only acts on what it wets, so complete coverage of the underside is the condition.

Rung one: no product
Nothing enters the orchard. On a small local colony this is often enough, and it costs the predators nothing at all.

Soap and oil work by smothering, not by poisoning; complete coverage of the underside is the condition, and they build no resistance.
Rung three: selective
A selective compound acts on sap-suckers and leaves the predators largely intact. It carries a pre-harvest interval.
Rung four: last resort
When the threshold has been crossed and a lower rung has been tried and was not enough. Once a season, and rotate the chemical group.
Eight steps before pulling the trigger
Two of these eight steps exist only to stop a spray happening: counting before deciding, and looking for larvae and mummies before reaching for anything at all.

Judge the result 5 days after the treatment, not the following morning. Dead aphids stay on the leaf for a while and the surviving ones are not immediately visible; only the second count tells the truth.
Chapter six
The aphid calendar: the cheapest job is in the month with no aphids
The shape of this chart is the whole argument. The most effective and cheapest intervention of the year sits in the three months when not one aphid can be seen, and the month a grower first notices the problem is the month every option has become expensive.

Six jobs that lower next year’s pressure
Not one of these six can be done on the day you see aphids; all of them happen before that day. Which is why an orchard with a plan sprays less, not more.

On a dormant, leafless tree. It takes the overwintering eggs, there is no predator in the orchard to harm, and there is no pre-harvest interval.

Keep nitrogen in check
Heavy nitrogen makes soft, watery growth — exactly what an aphid wants. An over-fed orchard is one that invited the colony in.

Fitted before ants become active in spring. The cheapest job on this page, and it works entirely in the predators’ favour.

A flowering strip beside the block
Adult lacewings and hoverflies eat pollen and nectar. With no flowers, you get no larvae to eat the aphids.

Remove water stress
A thirsty tree makes more concentrated, more nutritious sap for the aphid, and has no capacity to grow back what it loses. Consistent irrigation is part of pest control.

Suckers and water sprouts are the softest tissue in the orchard and an overwintering refuge. Broadleaf weeds host several species as an intermediate.

Chapter seven
Farkesht products and their part in this
Farkesht sells no insecticide, so this chapter does not claim to be the answer to an infestation. What it can honestly claim is the nutritional half of the problem: both the cause a colony is built on, and the rebuilding of a canopy that has been eaten.
Organic fertilisers
Organic fertilisers: balanced nutrition released gradually, instead of the nitrogen hit that makes the soft aphid-friendly growth. The slowest and most durable lever you have on pest pressure.
Biostimulants
Growth stimulants: for a tree whose canopy has been stripped and has to make it back before the season ends. These do not kill aphids; they help the tree out of the damage.
Plainly: neither of these two groups kills aphids, and we do not sell an aphid product. If the population is over the threshold, what you need is not on this list — it is in chapter five. What is here is the work that can be done before and after that day.

Common questions about aphids
The eight asked most often in the forum.
How do I know my tree has aphids?
Turn over the terminal leaves; the colony is under them, not on top. There are three indirect signs too: a sticky shine on leaves and fruit (honeydew), black velvety patches growing on that stickiness (sooty mould), and ants running steadily up and down the trunk. The ants are usually seen before the aphids are.
When should I spray?
When you have counted and crossed the threshold — not when you saw the first aphid. Before deciding, check two things: ladybird larvae and holed bronze aphids. If those are present, natural control is running, and waiting a week usually beats spraying. And never spray on open flowers.
Do home remedies like soapy water work?
Insecticidal soap genuinely works, but only on contact: any aphid you do not wet survives, so full coverage of the underside is the condition and several passes are needed. Ordinary dish detergent is not a substitute and scorches young leaves. For a few household trees, a jet of water is usually simpler and more effective than either.
What do ants have to do with aphids?
It is a trade: the ants eat the aphids’ honeydew and in return defend the colony against ladybirds, lacewings and parasitoid wasps, and even carry aphids to fresh shoots. While the ant route up the trunk is open, the natural enemies effectively have no access to the colony. A sticky band on the trunk is the cheapest measure on this whole page.
Should I buy ladybirds and release them?
Under cover, in a greenhouse, releases work. In an open orchard, bought adult ladybirds usually fly away. The more effective move is to make conditions right for the population that arrives on its own: a flowering strip to feed the adults, a band against the ants, and no broad-spectrum spray in the window when the predators are active.
I sprayed and they were back two weeks later. Why?
Three likely reasons: incomplete coverage, with nothing reaching the underside; winged forms re-entering from the neighbouring block; and above all, the loss of the predators. A broad-spectrum spray kills the aphids and their enemies together, but the aphid has twenty generations a year and the ladybird does not — so the aphid returns first, into a block with no competition left.
Does fertilising cause aphids?
Heavy nitrogen, yes. Excess nitrogen makes fast, soft, watery growth, and the sap of that tissue is exactly what aphids reproduce best on. That does not mean not feeding; it means the right amount at the right time. Balanced, gradually released nutrition keeps pest pressure lower.
Can I manage my orchard’s aphids from this page?
The framework and the numbers are here and it is enough to start. What a page cannot give you is trained eyes: telling a ladybird larva from a pest, finding a mummy on a leaf, and running a standard round on real ground. Those three affect the outcome more than any choice of product, and they are exactly what the video course shows.
