Diagnose Before You Spray: Many Pests Are Riding on Drought and Lime

Before spraying, read the trunk, leaves, roots and soil; in Iranian orchards much of the damage comes from drought, compaction and chlorosis, and an aimless spray kills the predators.

In many home gardens in Isfahan and Shiraz, the first response to a yellow leaf or a hole is to fill the sprayer. Blind spraying is an expense, it kills the predators, in the heat of July it lets mite explode, and sometimes it burns the bark and the fruit as well. A large part of what looks like a pest, in Iran's calcareous, water-short soils, is the tail end of stress: roots in compacted ground, iron locked up, a wet collar, and shallow irrigation. Integrated management means first reading the trunk, the leaves, the roots and the soil, weighing the damage threshold, and only treating in a targeted way once a living agent with a high population and progressing damage has been proven. Look at four levels separately: leaf, trunk, root, soil

A uniformly yellow young leaf with green veins is the classic pattern of iron chlorosis at high pH; an insecticide will not turn it green. Necrotic marginal patches after a heatwave are scorch and salinity more often than a fungal disease. Webbing on the underside of leaves in dry, dusty air is mite, and it often appears after a broad-spectrum spray. On the trunk, fine frass and an exit hole may mean a borer; sap or gum on its own is not always a pest. A dark, soft collar means rot and poor drainage. Look at the roots with a small hole in the canopy shade: pale and flexible against black and foul-smelling. Read the soil for compaction, a stagnant smell, surface salinity and a hard lime layer. Until you have written down all four levels, do not open the pesticide label.

The pests that ride on stress

Bark beetles and some borers prefer a weakened tree: an under-watered street plane, a pistachio under salinity, a pine with a wounded collar. Mealybug and armoured scale build up on shrubs suffering dust and water shortage. Mite goes through generations quickly in heat and dry soil. If you only spray and never give deep irrigation, mulch and relief from compaction, the population comes back. In pomegranate, part of the fruit cracking and leaf weakness comes down to fluctuating water and a calcium-boron shortage, not to some assumed caterpillar. In olive, check yellowing first against nutrition and drainage. Diagnosis means setting aside a suspect leaf sample, looking at both sides of the leaf with a hand lens, and if necessary sending photographs and a sample to a plant clinic; the neighbour's guess is not a source of protocol.

  • Iron chlorosis: yellow young leaves, green veins, calcareous soil; the right chelate and root correction, not a spray.
  • Drought stress: one-sided wilting, marginal leaf scorch, dry soil at forty centimetres.
  • Compaction: water standing at the surface, shallow roots, ground hard underfoot.
  • Mite: fine stippling and webbing, an outbreak after a broad-spectrum spray in the heat.
  • Borer: frass, holes, a crown weakening from the top down; timed treatment and removal of infested branches.

Prevention means the right species, healthy nursery stock, deadwood pruning at the right time, and not stripping bark with a strimmer. Monitoring means looking closely at those same ten trees every two weeks through the growing season, not once a year when the crown has already emptied. A threshold means that a few scale insects on one inner branch of a myrtle do not get the garden sprayed; an outbreak on fresh pomegranate fruit might. Bring the non-chemical tools out first: a strong wash on the underside of the leaves for mite and aphid during the cool hours, pruning out scale-infested branches, a sticky band on the trunk in specific cases, and keeping the ladybirds by not using broad-spectrum products. Heavy nitrogen invites aphid. In urban Isfahan, dust on ash leaves makes life easier for mite; washing the crown is sometimes more effective than two miticide applications.

Where a targeted treatment really is needed

An active borer on a valuable tree, armoured scale with a closed cover on commercial fruit, and a scale outbreak coating a branch are not places for endless patience. Here the timing matters: many insecticides work on newly emerged crawlers, not on a protected adult under its shield. Injection or trunk treatment for some borers makes sense only with the species identified and the flight calendar in hand; a canopy spray at midday in July usually neither reaches the larva inside the wood nor spares the environment. Read the label, respect the pre-harvest interval, and do not spray in wind or high temperature. If you have no firm diagnosis, take a sample branch to a clinic so the cost of an aimless spray does not multiply. Send photographs of both sides of the leaf and of the collar with the sample, so chlorosis and mite do not get mixed up and the prescription lands on the real agent rather than on a guess about the hot season.

  1. Note and photograph the symptoms on the leaf, the trunk, the collar and the soil.
  2. Rule water stress, chlorosis and compaction in or out.
  3. Name the living agent, with a hand lens or through a clinic.
  4. Weigh the damage threshold against the value of the tree and its phenological stage.
  5. If treatment is needed, choose the product, the timing and the point of action deliberately, then look at the result after ten to fourteen days.

If you spray the same tree every summer and every summer it gets worse, the protocol is wrong — there is no mysterious resistant pest. One proper diagnosis — a soil test, a collar inspection, a photograph of the leaf underside — usually moves the route from the sprayer to irrigation, an iron chelate or deadwood pruning. In the pistachio of Kerman and the plane trees of Isfahan, borer treatment arrives too late when frass at the foot of the trunk has been ignored for weeks; ask the clinic for that year's flight calendar rather than relying on last year's memory. Armoured scale on olive and citrus in the northern belt, once it has built a closed cover, is untouched by a midday canopy spray; you have to catch the crawler emergence.
