
Phosphorus does not move in Iran's calcareous soil. Its benefit is roots, flowers and seed, and its timing is placement close to the roots; a surface spread of superphosphate usually has no effect.
Phosphorus fertiliser is a source that delivers plant-available phosphorus, expressed as P2O5, to the soil or to a solution. Phosphorus is the energy metabolism of the cell: without it, new roots, flowers and seed are built late. In Iran's calcareous soils — that is, a large share of the orchards of Isfahan, Fars, Khorasan, Yazd and Kerman — phosphorus precipitates rapidly with calcium, and if it is spread on the surface it never reaches the roots. That is why many growers who say they gave phosphorus and it did nothing have in fact scattered superphosphate over a crust. What phosphorus fertiliser is and why it gets stuck in Iranian soil
In the plant, phosphorus is part of ATP, of the cell membrane and of the genetic material. Its shortage means too little energy for cell division in the root and in the flower meristem. Unlike nitrate, the phosphate ion moves very little in soil; a few centimetres in a season is normal. A pH above 7.5 and active lime turn phosphorus into insoluble calcium phosphate. Iron and aluminium do the same in acid soil, but acid soil is uncommon on the Iranian plateau. Excess residual phosphorus in the soil also locks up zinc; a stone-fruit orchard that has had heavy superphosphate for years may show a zinc deficiency rather than a phosphorus one. So give phosphorus every year is not a prescription. A test for available phosphorus on that particular plot makes the decision.

The benefits of phosphorus for roots, flowers and yield
The first visible benefit is the root: more root hairs, faster establishment of transplants and saplings, and in field crops a filled row. The second is the entry into the reproductive stage: flowering on time, fruit and seed set. The third is a more even ripening of grain in cereals and oilseeds when phosphorus has been available, not when it was scattered at the end of the season. Phosphorus does not make dark green leaves; that is nitrogen's job. A plant high in nitrogen and low in phosphorus may look green but have weak roots and delayed flowering. In potato and carrot, phosphorus together with potassium builds the quality of the underground store. In fruit trees, phosphorus stored in autumn and winter feeds the spring flowers; phosphorus applied in June usually does not reach that year's flowers.

Symptoms of phosphorus deficiency
Phosphorus deficiency is often noticed late because the plant is merely small and slow. The leaf may turn a dark green with a bluish cast, and in some species, especially in cold weather, the underside or the veins take on a purple tint. Do not confuse that purple with cultivar, cold and virus. Root growth is weak, transplants stay stunted, flowering is delayed, and in maize grain set becomes irregular. Unlike nitrogen, uniform yellowing of the old leaf is not phosphorus's main face. In the cold springs of Azerbaijan and the Zagros, phosphorus uptake slows even when it is present in the soil, and a temporary symptom appears; part of it reverses as the soil warms. A soil test for available phosphorus separates this from guessing at a colour.
Do not buy phosphorus for the leaves; buy it for the roots and the flowers. If it lands on the surface of calcareous soil it precipitates there, and you pay twice: once for the fertiliser and once for the yield you lost.

Sources of phosphorus fertiliser and the method that works in calcareous soil
Single and triple superphosphate are the most common soil sources. Monoammonium phosphate and diammonium phosphate suit placement and fertigation better because they are more soluble; in very hard water the mixing order has to be respected so they do not precipitate in the tank. Phosphoric acid is used in greenhouses with control of the solution's pH. Organic fertilisers release phosphorus more slowly and do not on their own fill an acute deficiency. In alkaline soil, spreading superphosphate on the surface is the least effective method. A band beside the seed, a furrow in the canopy shade, a winter fertiliser pit, and injection into a drip system with a soluble source all raise the chance of contact with the roots. When to apply phosphorus fertiliser
The right time is when the root is taking it up and the element has not yet been locked. In annual crops: at sowing or shortly before, placed in the seed band or below the row. Phosphorus given at the end of the season does not reach that year's grain. In transplants: in the medium and in the establishment fertigation, not after the plants have gone leggy. In deciduous trees: autumn and winter for soil placement, so that rain and winter irrigation put it in contact with the roots; spring for the start of uptake. In evergreens and date palms: on the root and irrigation calendar of that climate, not copied from an apple orchard. Do not mix phosphorus fertiliser with a spring nitrogen top dressing and expect rapid greening. If the test for available phosphorus is high, do not apply phosphorus this year and check the zinc.
- Take a test for available phosphorus, active lime and pH.
- If it is needed, place the source in a band, in a furrow or in a fertiliser pit beside the roots.
- In field crops, time phosphorus with sowing, not with the last irrigation.
- In trees, use the autumn and winter window for a slow-moving source.
- Do not mix phosphorus fertiliser with a micronutrient chelate in one tank without instructions.
- Next year, check with a test whether the reserve has risen or is still being fixed.

Do not mistake too much phosphorus for extra caution. Phosphorus accumulation in a stone-fruit orchard shuts down zinc, and in field crops it creates environmental runoff.
